How to Train for the Marathon des Sables: The Ultimate Guide

The Marathon des Sables isn’t just a race, it’s a test of endurance, resilience, and preparation. Over six gruelling days, you’ll cover more than 250 kilometres across the Sahara Desert, carrying everything you need on your back in searing heat.

Whether you’re aiming to complete the race, take on your first multi-day ultra, or compete for a top placing, this guide will help you train smart, prepare thoroughly, and arrive at the start line ready.

For Beginners: From Bucket List to Finish Line

If you’re taking on MdS as a once-in-a-lifetime challenge, the aim is simple: finish strong, unbroken, and proud. You don’t need to be fast, you need to be durable.

Here’s what matters most:

  • Time on feet over pace. Forget your GPS splits, focus on building up your capacity to move comfortably for hours, day after day.
  • Back-to-back training days. Your body needs to adapt to fatigue. Regular double run weekends are invaluable for conditioning.
  • Train with your pack early. Beginners benefit from comfort. Don’t obsess over cutting weight, prioritise gear that helps you eat, sleep, and recover well.
  • Embrace discomfort. Learn to manage blistered feet, sore shoulders, and dry mouth. MdS rewards runners who are mentally adaptable.

For First-Time Ultra-Runners: From Marathons to Multi-Days

If you’ve run marathons or 50Ks but never tackled a multi-stage event, training becomes about physical conditioning and strategic adaptation.

Focus on:

  • Cumulative fatigue tolerance. The MdS wears runners down over time. Plan your training to simulate that – long weekends, stage simulations, smart deloading.
  • Pack-weight efficiency. Even a few kilos affects running form. Gradually build up to carrying your full race-day pack.
  • Fuel and hydration testing. Practice fuelling while under fatigue and heat stress, what works on a 3-hour trail run might fail on day three in the desert.
  • Heat training. If you can’t train in a hot climate, use saunas, layers, or post-run hot baths to mimic the effect and build adaptation.

For Competitive Athletes: From Completion to Performance

If you’re aiming for a strong finish position, every detail counts. Speed matters, but so do logistics, mental strategy, and physiological tolerance.

Key focus areas:

  • Minimise pack weight. Within the race’s 6.5kg minimum, aim to strip your load to essentials without compromising safety or fuelling.
  • Systematic heat acclimation. Don’t wing it, follow progressive sauna sessions, heat-based intervals, and sweat testing.
  • Stage strategy. It’s not just about running fast. You need to pace the long stage, manage rest, and control your effort across six days.
  • Elite mindset conditioning. In the desert, everyone hurts. The difference is how you respond to pain, stress and fatigue when it shows up.

Universal Principles for MdS Success

After years coaching MdS runners, and training for hundreds of hours in the Egyptian desert, I’ve learned a few non-negotiables:

  • Train for the terrain. Sand, dunes, rocks, get used to running off-road, uneven surfaces, and power hiking.
  • Build progressive volume. Weekly mileage should increase gradually, with built-in recovery weeks.
  • Simulate race conditions. Wear your pack, eat your race food, and sleep in basic environments to prep for race week.
  • Recover smart. Volume is important, but you only adapt from what you recover from.
  • Work on mental endurance. The Sahara will challenge your mindset. Prepare for it like you prepare your body.

Example Training Structure

Base Phase (8–10 weeks)

  • Aerobic volume build
  • Strength and mobility
  • Pack introduction
  • Core & posture work

Specific Phase (8–10 weeks)

  • Long back-to-back runs
  • Terrain exposure (sand, trails, inclines)
  • Heat training protocol
  • Nutrition/hydration testing

Peak Phase (2–3 weeks)

  • Stage simulation (3–4 days)
  • Race kit dress rehearsals
  • Tactical sessions

Taper (2–3 weeks)

  • Decrease volume, sharpen focus
  • Gear check, logistics, mindset prep
