Inside the Mind of an Ultramarathon Coach: How I Build Resilient, Race-Ready Athletes
Most people think a running coach simply writes a plan. In truth, effective coaching goes far deeper. It’s about understanding physiology, psychology, and human behaviour, then blending all three into a system that develops resilience as much as fitness.
As an ultramarathon coach, I’ve learned that what separates the finishers from the broken isn’t just VO₂ max or weekly mileage, it’s durability. It’s how well an athlete’s body and mind hold together when fatigue has set in, when every fibre says “stop,” and the race is only halfway done.
This article gives a look behind the curtain, how a professional ultramarathon coach thinks, structures training, and builds athletes who thrive under extreme stress.
What a Running Coach Really Does
A good running coach isn’t a spreadsheet generator. Coaching is a conversation between science and the individual. It starts with assessment: the athlete’s physiology, biomechanics, lifestyle, and psychology. Then comes translation, turning data and theory into practical, sustainable work.
A running coach balances stress and recovery. Training is stress; adaptation happens in recovery. The art lies in delivering the right stress at the right time. That means interpreting data, pacing trends, perceived effort, sleep quality, and mood.
Just as importantly, a coach manages emotion. Confidence, self-doubt, and discipline all affect performance. The coach’s role is to provide objectivity when the athlete can’t see the bigger picture.
When I first started coaching, I realised the biggest skill wasn’t prescribing workouts, it was listening. Every training log entry, every bit of feedback, gives clues about readiness, resilience, and how much the athlete can truly handle.
What Makes an Ultramarathon Coach Different
Marathon training is about efficiency. Ultramarathon coaching is about survival, sustainable performance over endless hours, climbs, temperature swings, and psychological chaos.
An ultramarathon coach must integrate more variables than any other coaching discipline: nutrition, heat management, terrain, altitude, pacing, sleep deprivation, and mindset. Every decision affects fatigue resistance.
One of my athletes, Matt Field, broke the British record in the 24 hour ultra-endurance format because we focused not just on fitness but on his rate of decay. We trained his body to hold form, pace, and decision-making deep into the night. That’s durability.
I build this through principles drawn from other coaching lineages such as The Soviet systems (ignoring some of their more dubious techniques), which used block periodisation, concentrating specific stress for powerful adaptation. and a lot of Renato Canova’s work whose “specific endurance” training extends quality effort deep into fatigue. These are not ultra specific but as a coach it’s up to me to take these kinds of principles and adapt them for the ultra runners I work with.
Each approach teaches the same truth: you must train fatigue itself if you want to perform under it.
The Science Behind Fatigue Resistance
Fatigue resistance, also called durability, is the ability to maintain performance once the easy energy is gone. Physiologically, it depends on how efficiently your muscles use oxygen and how well your nervous system recruits fibres when glycogen runs low.
During long efforts, slow-twitch fibres tire first, forcing the body to call on less economical fast-twitch fibres. Unless those are conditioned, pace and form crumble. This is where targeted training matters.
Three proven ways to build fatigue resistance:
1. Back-to-Back Long Runs – Two long days in a row, typically 3–4 hours Saturday and 2–3 hours Sunday. The second run starts with pre-fatigued legs, teaching the body to metabolise fat efficiently and stabilise form when tired.
2. Fast-Finish Long Runs – After two hours of steady running, accelerate for the final 30–60 minutes. This improves glycogen sparing and neuromuscular recruitment under fatigue, essential for the final stretch of any ultra.
3. Muscular-Endurance Hill Circuits – Uphill treadmill runs or hikes or weighted hills. These strengthen the exact fibres that fail first in long races, particularly the quads and calves.
These methods work because they extend time in a fatigued state under control, rather than simply increasing total mileage. Done intelligently, they harden both body and mind without tipping into over-training.
The Psychology of Ultra Coaching
A running coach typically trains the body; an ultramarathon coach trains the mind as well.
Ultras are psychological endurance tests disguised as physical ones. Late in a 100-miler, your body is still capable of moving, but only if your mind stays composed.
My role often becomes part-psychologist: teaching athletes to manage low points, detach from negative thoughts, and focus on the process rather than the pain.
I draw on cognitive-behavioural strategies and the “Endurance Mindset Code” I teach my athletes:
• Reframe discomfort – interpret pain as data, not threat.
• Shrink the race – focus only on the next climb, checkpoint, or 30 minutes.
• Detach from outcome – concentrate on execution, not position.
Coaching mindset is ongoing, it happens in training, not the start line. Every tough workout is an opportunity to practise staying calm in adversity.
The Art of Individualisation
Two athletes can follow the same plan with entirely different results. That’s why cookie-cutter training rarely works at the ultra level.
When I design a plan, I start with the athlete’s life. Family, job, sleep, stress, all dictate recovery. Then I look at training age: years of consistent work, not biological age. Finally, I consider goals: speed-based 50 k or mountainous 100 miler?
Data guides decisions, but intuition refines them. I monitor data to gauge aerobic stability, but I also read between the lines, how the athlete describes their energy, mood, and motivation. Numbers are clues; context is truth.
Individualisation also means pacing progression. I don’t rush high-intensity work into an unprepared athlete. We build a wide aerobic foundation first, then layer specificity. One key stimulus at a time, with recovery built in.
Common Mistakes When Training Without a Coach
Self-coached runners often make predictable errors:
1. Too much intensity, too little recovery. They chase pace, not adaptation.
2. Neglecting durability work. Plenty of mileage, but little time under fatigue.
3. Ignoring fuelling and hydration. The best engine fails without fuel.
4. Copying elite plans. What works for pros rarely suits working adults.
5. Emotional decision-making. Training harder out of guilt or fear, not logic.
A good running coach filters these impulses. We provide perspective when enthusiasm outweighs wisdom. That outside voice often prevents injury, burnout, and stagnation.
What to Look for in a Running or Ultramarathon Coach
If you’re considering hiring a coach, treat it like choosing a business partner. Look for:
• Proven experience in your event type.
• Scientific literacy—the ability to explain why a session matters.
• Communication style you trust.
• Adaptability—life happens; your plan must flex.
• Philosophy alignment—are they evidence-based, intuitive, or both?
A qualified ultramarathon coach understands that success isn’t about perfect weeks, it’s about long-term consistency and learning from feedback.
The Coach–Athlete Relationship
The longer I coach, the more I value connection over metrics. The best results come when trust is mutual. The athlete commits to honest feedback; I commit to adapting the plan intelligently.
In that partnership, data becomes dialogue. A drop in HRV isn’t a failure, it’s information to adjust. A bad long run isn’t wasted, it’s rehearsal for problem-solving mid-race.
This is what real coaching looks like: constant iteration, guided by science and grounded in empathy.
